The LED's are formed in a complete circle to project light where it is required. Unlike fluorescent lights that light from the base up, LED's light from the top down, so the brightest light is the part that the motorist sees most of.
The light is reflected around the 'Keep Left' sign to light the roundall and the sign;s base and back, but, due to the characteristics of the plastic, the light also lights the yellow panel as well.
We have also designed our own driver to run the system. The system is very simple, but at the same time effective.
The white LED's are slightly under-run thereby using the same amount of electricity, however, the real cost savings are the maintenance and the lamp changes.
Comparison:
Conventional Fluorescent fitting - total cost of 'Keep Left' sign for 5 years:
Top, base, cutout, fluorescent gear tray and earthing £320.
Total cost over 5 years including gear tray replacement and electricity costs £770.
LED tray fitted in the base unit with reflex top, initial cost £546 per unit.
Total cost over a five year period including electricity costs £594.50 per unit.
Therefore a cost saving of £175.50 per unit is achieved, based on the above figures.
The cost saving for five hundred units is £87,750.
These figures have been based on local contractor's rates and 0.04p per unit for electricity. There should not be any need to replace the LED tray for five years.
